SOAP BOX DERBY CAR SPECIFICATIONS
General Regulations:

The seating area is to be enclosed to protect the driver.

Cars must run on 4 (four) wheels
-
Axles must not rotate
-
Axles must be a minimum of ½” Diameter Solid, cold rolled steel

Feet must be foremost when the driver is in the facing position
-
No added weight will be allowed in car.

All drivers must wear a safety helmet when racing (hockey or motorcycle style with full face protection)

It is a good practice for all drivers to use a functional seat belt when racing. The belt must not be attached to any vertical side portion of the car.

Hand brakes will not be allowed. A functioning foot brake is to be used.

Steering must be controlled by a fixed mechanical means. No foot or hand held line steering will be permitted. All steering must be limited to prevent loss of control. Wheels must turn in same direction as steering wheel.

Steering wheel is to be built as to have no sharp edges or protrusions.

Wheel Spread / Axle Front = min. 24”, max. 36”
Rear = min. 30”, max. 36”
Car should have a front and rear clearance angle of approx. 35o for ramp clearance.

Overall Car Length: min. = 46” max. = 84”

Utility Steel Lawnmower or wheelbarrow wheels max. 8” in diameter are to be used. Min. tread width on ground=1.75” (1 ¾”). All other wheels other then the above specified will be placed in the open class. No spoked or air filled tires will be allowed in any class.

Beginner drivers will be allowed to have one test run down the hill to test the ability and confidence of both the car and the driver.
ALL CARS MUST PASS A SAFETY INSPECTION. THIS WILL INCLUDE A RUN DOWN THE HILL TO VERIFY STEERING AND PROPER BRAKING. ONCE PASSED THE CAR WILL BE CERTIFIED READY TO RACE.
THE INPECTORS DECISION WILL BE FINAL!
Rules & Regulations

Entrants: There will be three categories: Ages 6 to 9, ages 10 to 16 and an Open Class ages 6 to 18.
A parent or guardian must accompany all entrants on race day. NO EXCEPTIONS!!

Maximum Number of Entrants: There will be a maximum of 60 entrants in the Soap Box Derby. Entrants will be registered on a first come first served basis.
(A car can only be entered in one class; it can have multiple drivers but is considered 1 car for race purposes.)

Age: Entrants must be between the ages of six to eighteen. There will be three participant categories: Junior Stock – Ages 6 to 9*
Senior Stock – Ages 10 to 16
Open Class – Ages 6 to Up.
* To balance the stock classes some 9 year olds may be placed in either Junior or Senior divisions.
- Entering Cars From Prior Derbies:Cars that have been run in past Derbies can be re-entered if the car meets the standards as set out in these rules and regulations and passes the Safety Inspection.
Safety Rules

Protective Gear For Driver: The Driver must wear a protective helmet, with a face guard or face shield. It is also preferable to have the driver wear gloves, elbow pads and shin pads, although this is not mandatory.

Safety Committee: a Safety Committee will perform Safety Inspections on race day to assure that the above rules are strictly complied with. If in the opinion of the Committee, a car is unsafe, the Committee has the right to disqualify the car from the Derby.

They will give their opinion. These comments however, will not override the Safety Committee’s decisions.
Stay in lanes during race: During the race each racer is required to stay in his/her lanes. If any racer crosses over they will be disqualified. This is for the safety of all racers.
