What is the Blackfalds Soapbox Derby Association
Soapbox racing began in Blackfalds in 1997 with the Tress kids wanting something to do in the summer. Using all kinds of parts from pallets, bicycle wheels, shopping carts and being pushed across a finish line in front of town hall. Since then Soapbox racing has evolved in Blackfalds. In 1998 the hill was introduced as well as a guideline for safe racing. Now everyone had an equal chance of winning. Since then, it is also held in conjunction with Blackfalds Days. The kids could show off their cars in the parade.
1998 was the only year a “wiggle” start was used as drivers at a stand still had to wiggle their cars to gain momentum until gravity took over. All materials to build a soapbox car was supplied to anyone and build seminars were held. In 1999 a starting ramp from scaffolding was erected but we learned four hours to set up and the work involved was not what we had in mind. So in the summer we built our own ramps with drop gates to start the races and since then it has been 20 minutes to set up and take down.
In September of 1999 we had the “Last Great Race of the Century” and a family dance at the arena. In 2000 the “Open Class” was put in place for cars with different wheels and body materials to give all racers an equal opportunity.
We also hosted in the fall of 2000 our “Alberta Showdown” which saw cars come for many towns and cities.
In 2001 the only change we had was the T-shirts were designed by the kids.
The only way we can host this race every year is due to the hard work of the volunteers and the support of our many sponsors. I would have to say our biggest sponsor is Mother Nature so far because it has always been great weather.
So pull up the lawn chairs, sit back and cheer on the kids. The Blackfalds Soapbox Derby may not be the Indy 500 but in our eyes its better.
